Capsule endoscopy - new approach to diagnosis of Crohn´s disease

Publication |
2006

Abstract

Capsule endoscopy (CE) is a safe and minimally invasive method of small bowel investigation. The most frequent indication to the capsule endoscopy is obscure gastrointestinal bleeding.

In the patients with suspected or known Crohn´s disease, higher diagnostic yield of CE can be helpful too, if compared with the radiographic methods (diagnostic yield in this indication is significantly lower to CE). CE seems to be useful in the type and extent of small bowel involvement as well as in identification of early stages of Crohn´s disease.

A higher risk of the capsule retention in those patients must be taked into account.
