Abstract
Wenceslas of Bohemia, duke of Luxembourg, Brabant and Limburg (1337-1383), was the third son of John the Blind, king of Bohemia and count of Luxembourg (1396-1346) and the only child of his second wife Beatrix of Bourbon. He inherited the county of Luxembourg and his wife Joan of Brabant, the eldest daughter of the duke John III, inherited the duchies of Brabant and Limburg.
Their accessions to the thrones in Luxembourg and Brabant were not easy: the first one was delayed by Wenceslas' step-brother Charles, king of Romans and of Bohemia, and his enormous debts due to his Roman crown (1346-1354); the second one was complicated because of the war of succession in Brabant (1356-57). The duke of Luxembourg and Brabant played an important role in the relations between the Holy Roman Empire ruled by the House of Luxembourg and France governed by his step-sister Bonne's son Charles (V).
