Abstract
This article summarizes state-of-the-art knowledge on environmental characteristics of biofuels and their potential for decreasing environmental pressures. It focuses on limitations in achieving of greenhouse gas emission reduction of fossil origin and comparison of emission characteristics of biodiesel and bioethanol with conventional fuels.
At the same time, it points out relatively high energy demand for biofuel production and potential pressures on intensification of farming.
