Abstract
The article makes an overview of the role of education in the sustainable development strategy with a special focus to the higher education sphere. Important options of the universities' support to the sustainable development are analyzed.
Some of those activities are based on the unique character of universities as institutions - particularly an interdisciplinary research or, more precisely sustainability science. Futher, attention is paid to the environmental performance of universities and their strategical planning.
The article also describes cuurent international networks which intend to support sustainable universities. Two case studies are presented as well.
