Czech Experience with Education for Sustainability (Reflection of Hidden Paradigms)

Abstract

The article reviews development of the Czech environmental education concepts in brief. Environmental science has been based on a system approach which consolidated the nature conservationist tradition with the fluid concept of ?the environment?.

The interpretation of complex disciplinary interrelationships as an implication (and also affirmation) of the general system theory opens a new view on unity in science. In this regard, environmental education based on holism as a philosophical perspective is being challenged by the author and analyzed against implications of postmodern philosophical concepts.

Discourse differences in postmodern condition make integration of disciplinary knowledge impossible. This perspective leads to inter-disciplinary communication, democratic dialogue among disciplines and beyond boundaries of the science itself.

Possibilities opened by postmodern thinking are being explored and compared with certainties related to policy imperatives and enframed by concepts of modernity.
