Abstract

One of the prominent features of medieval society was the fight over sovereignty between the ecclesiastical and secular powers. During the period of the fight a number of works were written that supported either side of the conflict based on arguments often originating from the same source, often even from the same author.

To a certain extent such was the case of the work of Thomas Aquinas; his thoughts were used to support both Papal and secular demands. The article analyzes the ways in which Thomas's writing De regno ad regem Cypri could have been utilized by both sides.
