Abstract
The author reviews the recently published monograph Comparing Empires: Encounters and Transfers in the Long Nineteenth Century and evaluates the different ways it helps to expand our knowledge about the internal development and the similarities between four multinational empires (Austria-Hungary, Great Britain, Russia and the Ottoman Empire) in the nineteenth century.
