Forgeries and Art Evaluation: An Argument for Aesthetic Dualism

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2011

Abstract

The article presents a solution to the philosophical problem of artistic forgeries. I argue that previous ''solutions'' of this problem are unsatisfactory, since they rest on the (monistic) assumption that the value of works of art consists exclusively in their aesthetic value.

Against this I offer a dualist perspective, which is based on the conceptual distinction between the aesthetic and artistic values of art.
