Practical method transfer from high performance liquid chromatography to ultra-high performance liquid chromatography: The importance of frictional heating

Abstract

The amount of frictional heating in UHPLC was empirically estimated. Frictional heating was measured for 1.0 and 2.1 mm I.D.

UHPLC columns. The heating was equal to +4 degrees C, +8 degrees C and +16 degrees C at 300, 600 and 1000 bar, respectively.

The frictional heating effect is still important with 1.0 mm I.D. columns. The best solution to compensate frictional heating is to decrease temperature in UHPLC.
