The mainstream debate about a possible European identity cannot avoid the question: Should the European Identity be based on its Christian traditions and be defined culturally, or should it be affiliated with the secular traditions of the European Enlightenment and be defined territorially as a common living space for all its citizens? If we look to India, we can find a similar discussion on a very similar basis. Both territories can be considered as artificially created polities consisting of a large number of linguistic, cultural and geographic zones, followers of different religions and speakers of numerous mother tongues.

Nevertheless, the founders of the independent India were able to create a genuine Indian identity. Is it possible to think about the similar move towards similar common identity in Europe? How the Indian concept of the "unity in diversity" could inspire the European policymakers in the making of the European identity?
