Abstract

The West Bengal state assembly election, which took place in April and May 2011, led not only to a landslide victory of the All India Trinamool Congress, but signified also a considerable historical milestone: they ended the rule of the longest serving democratically elected Communist government in the world, which survived for 34 years and seven democratic elections.
