The 20 years of the Visegrad Group: an alliance changing shape

Abstract

The Visegrad Group has made a clear imprint on the geopolitical map of the Central Europe in the last 20 years. A question arises however: as a sub-regional political grouping inside the European Union, can the VG and does the VG need to become a political entity, an actor of high European politics? While relatively successful on a micro level via the International Visegrad Fund, its presence has been reactive, occasional and little systematic in Brussels.

The ability of the VG to shape the EU Eastern neighbourhood policy or the energy security policies might prove to be good test cases.
