Abstract

Marie Carmichael Stopes (1880-1958) was a Scottish scholar, paleobotanist, women''s rights campaigner and pioneer of birth control. Her most famous book, *Married Love*, as well as her other activities connected to propagation of birth control and breaking down taboos about sex were both controversial and influential.

In 1921, she opened first family planning clinic in English speaking world.
