Abstract

Isothermal section of the Er-Ni-In system at T=870 K was constructed by means of X-ray powder diffraction and EDX-analyses. Nine ternary compounds, namely ErNi(9)In(2) (YNi(9)In(2)-type), Er(1-1.22)NI(4)In(1-0.78) (MgCu(4)Sn-type), Er(10)Ni(9.07)In(20) (Ho(10)Ni(9)In(20)-type), ErNi(1-0.60)In(1-1.40) (ZrNiAl-type), Er(2)Ni(2)In (Mn(2)AIB(2)-type), Er(2)Ni(1.78)In (Mo(2)FeB(2)-type), Er(5)Ni(2)In(4) (Lu(5)Ni(2)In(4)-type), Er(5)Ni(2)In (Mo(5)SiB(2)-type), and Er(13.53)Ni(3.14)In(3.33) (Lu(14)Co(2)In(3)-type), exist in the Er-Ni-In system at this temperature.

The substitution of Ni for In was observed for ErNi(1-0.60)In(1-1.40) and In for Er in the case of related compounds ErNi(2) and ErNi(4)In. Er can enter NiIn (CoSn-type) leading to including-substitution type of compound Er(0-0.12)NiIn(1-0.89).

Basic magnetic properties of the Er(0.04)NiIn(0.97), ErNi(2), Er(0.9)Ni(2)In(0.1), and ErNi(4)In phases were inspected. Electrical-resistivity studies were performed on the ErNiIn, ErNi(0.9)In(1.1), and ErNi(4)In phases. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc.
