Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2011

Abstract

The paper dealt with the typology of representations of masculinity in the constitutive book of the Czech scouting movement named Základy junáctví (Basics of Scouting). The question was how much was in the context of Czech society in the time before World War reflected of the crisis of masculinity, which is usually considered as one of the important dimensions of the English and the American Scout Movement, and how it affected his image.Symptoms of this crisis have been found only in the texts of three authors, including Antonín B.

Svojsík, the founder and dominant figure of Czech scouting movement and author of nearly a half of the texts in the book. He also influenced the education of boys in the Scout Groups in the next twenty years.

The attempts to explain the crisis of masculinity failed, because nor generational criteria neither criteria of socio-cultural orientation did fit.
