Nová média a nová rizika: dvojí individualizace odpovědnosti

Publication

Abstract

This article proposes a theoretical framework for studying new media and its use by the elderly people in risk society. New risks are determined by its immateriality and therefore discourses of sciences and media are indispensable for separating the new risks "out of the cloud of indeterminacy".

The article shows that recognition of new risks can take place not only in area of media production (by risk reporting) but also by media consumption/use, by audiences''/users'' will to accept certain risks as objects of their decision-making. In this article we strive to see and pin down conceptually the challenges of dealing with the recognition of new risks via new media (mainly internet) in the old age.

The concept of "double individualization" of responsibility is coined as the central theoretical category to explain this process because individualization lies at the core of new risks brought about by risk society as well as new media.
