The most common viral agents are rotaviruses, cliciviruses, adenoviruses and astroviruses, but also other viruses cause an intestinal disease. The most severe clinical course is expected from the rotaviral and noroviral infection.

The dehydratation, which could be less or more severe, often complicated the infection. The treatment is symptomatic.

The most important role for the prevention of rotavirus disease is played by the vaccination.
