"No Human Algebra Can Furnish a Key": Hume''s Final Thoughts on Causation

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2011

Abstract

This lecture examines Hume''s final thoughts about causation presented in his Dialogues concerning Natural Religion, published after his death. It is shown that Hume held that there is real necessity in nature, but that human minds do not have the "key" that would give us an understanding of this necessity.

It is therefore shown that Hume was not a reductionist about causation, but a profound sceptic.
