Microstructure and composition of medieval ceramic floor tiles from Rokytná

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

Significant archaeological collection of eleven fragments of medieval ceramic tiles was found in site Rokytná. This collection is very heterogeneous in terms of both style and quality of design and shape variability.

Three characteristic fragments of tiles were selected for the research as all the shards were not possible to use for analyzes. Their chemical and mineralogical compositions were evaluated by methods XRF, XRD and DTA.

Microstructure was observed by optical microscope. It was proved that the evaluated samples of three ceramic shards are very similar in composition and firing temperature of the tiles did not exceed 800 oC.
