Altered States of Consciousness - Phenomenological and Biosemiotical Interpretation

Publication |
2011

Abstract

This paper explores phenomenology of perception and corporeality (Merleau-Ponty, Barbaras, and others), as well as biosemiotical approach to life (Barbieri, Hoffmeyer, Markos, and others) as methodological tools for explaining ASC. Phenomenology approaches consciousness from inside of the sensing and moving body.

Biosemiotics (biological theory which postulates semiosphere as another of Earth''s spheres alongside with biosphere, atmosphere, etc.) sees the same body as a integral part of the communicating whole of planetary life.
