Abstract

This paper is inspired by a pilot study for a dissertation. It is based on qualitative analysis of interviews with patients, which were focused on the patient''s experiences with their medical institution.

Patient and doctor enter their relationship from different positions and mutual asymmetry is reflected in the process of communication. Patient''s reflection of communication with doctor (medical staff) brings experience with a feeling of security, acceptance and appreciation of personal value as well as a feeling of loneliness, helplessness.

The paper studies interpersonal communication from a systematic approach emphasising communication as holistic, non-linear, multilayer and mainly as a field where not only exchange of information is made but which also reports about the character of the relationship of participants. Findings are based on the analysis of situations which are typical by the asymmetrical relationship between medical staff and patient and the way how patients deal with these situations.
