Abstract
The demographic trend of population ageing and the development of health care are two closely linked areas. Transformations are occurring in the epidemiology of illnesses and the significance of chronic illness, especially neurodegenerative, often accompanied by disability.
The article summarises the basic factors influencing the provision of care to the very elderly population and the specific needs of seniors during illness and in situations of long-term dependency. It highlights the strong and weak points of the current provision of acute geriatric care and long-term care in the Czech Republic.
