Abstract
The text presented is an attempt at a modern and superregionally perceived treatment of the development of a significant Central European historical region between the seventh century and the beginning of the twelfth century with the main emphasis being placed on the testimony of the material sources; their catalogue is the first pivotal point of the text. Regional development in the area is conceived significantly differently from the earlier nationalistically burdened points of view; the concept of the ''Slavonic Cheb Region'', unsupportable by the sources, has been replaced with the conception of the ''early medieval enclave''.
Its historical role within the wider territory, which can be defined as the area of the upper parts of the Rivers Main, Naab and Ohře (Eger), represents the culmination of the revision of the perception so far of the early medieval Cheb region, whose development corresponds well with the latest knowledge of the Bavarian medieval studies.
