Relative clauses with absolutive CO

Abstract

The chapter presents a typology of Czech relative clauses with the absolutive relativizor, as attested in the CNK. The analysis of their use and distribution leads to several conclusions: this type of RC is still poorly understood and in the Czech grammatical literature mostlly ignored; their functional spectrum is broader than traditionally assumed and reaches into coordinative uses as well (with explicative meaning); the presence/absence of resumptive pronoun is subject to various semantic criteria and not just the simple opposition direct-indirect cases; the presence/absence of the accusative pronoun seems to correlate with the semantic distinction identificational-explicative in the meaning of the RC itself.
