Christiane Nord''s model of translation analysis: application in translator training

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2009

Abstract

The paper explores the potential that the translation analysis model of German scholar Christiane Nord has for translator training. The analysis of a source text, based on extratextual and intratextual factors, is compared with the translation brief received from the client; results of this comparison lead to identification of translation problems, linguistic as well as pragmatic, which are involved in target text production.

Nord''s model was designed primarily as support to student translators by helping them consciously identify all aspects involved in intercultural communication and, this way, become more confident professionals; teachers, in their turn, may apply the model''s factors as guiding criteria for text selection and translation quality assessment.
