Introduction: from instances of change to explanations of change

Publication |
2010

Abstract

The chapter assesses the theoretical and methodological trends defining most recent tendencies in diachronic research, including research in linguistic variation. The primary shift in focus concerns diminishing interest in simply cataloguing instances of change in formal systems independently of any contextual considerations, and greater emphasis on the role of context (both narrowly and broadly conceived) in language change, as witnessed particularly in the growing importance of grammaticalization research.
