Colonization of central European abandoned fields by dry grassland species depends on the species richness of the source habitats: a new approach for measuring habitat isolation

Abstract

Approximately 2/3 of study dry grassland species occurred in abandoned fields. Number of species found on the fields depended on habitat characteristics of the fields as well as on izolation of the fields from the source grasslands.

The effect of izolation, however, differs according to method used for its calculation and newly introduced isolation measure based on species richness of the source habitats was always better predict species richness of the fields.
