Abstract

Crime and safety in urban space belong to the important research topics in social sciences, including urban studies and geography. At the same time, safety represents one of the key agendas of public authorities in contemporary urban planning and management.

However, not only the incidence and distribution of crime in urban space, but importantly also its perception by people influences the quality of urban life. Accordingly, this paper discusses the concept of fear of crime and presents, based on the empirical findings from Prague and its hinterland, the differential perception of safety by various groups and in diverse residential environments of the capital.
