Abstract
Introduction to the sources of the medieval rural settlement studies, aims and methods, archaeological evidence (tools, fields, rural industry), the study of deserted villages, site formation processes. Two case studies are concentrated on deserted medieval villages from Bohemia (Svídna) and Moravia (Bystřec).
