Abstract

The anonymous questionnaire enquiry has been carried out in order to clarify an approach of teachers to their own health. The group of 484 teachers on various school levels has been investigated.

Their approach to the health has been assessed on the grounds of prevalence of some factors of the life style, namely those preventable ones, and of their preventive check ups participation. When compared with the rest of Czech population teachers show better body mass index, they are less obese (in 6.6% only), smoke less frequently (7% of regular and 5.3% of occasional smokers), they eat more regularly (76.5%), and have a greater portion of physical activity (median of 5 hours per week during Summer and 3,5 hours per week in Winter).

Teachers also have better extent of participation in preventive check ups. The regular check ups by general practitioners for adults are being passed by 77.8% of teachers, practical dentists by 92.1 % and practical gynaecologists by 90.6% of women teachers.

Nevertheless, partially higher risk could be found in the group of university teachers who showed relatively high risk factors prevalence and also a lower frequency of preventive regular check ups. This finding could be probably explain by higher prevalence of teachers up to 35 years of age and higher distribution of men in this group in comparison with the other types of schools.
