This paper deals with methods and procedures of familiarizing students with the "obecná čeština" (substandard variety of Czech). It is based on the experience of teaching in semester intensive courses at the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies, Charles University in Prague, which led to the B1 level (CERF). Courses are designed for students to gain general language proficiency in Czech. The textbook used in courses is Česky krok za krokem 2 (authors Lída Holá and Pavla Bořilová). Different ethnic structure of groups (Slavs, Asians etc.) allows compare different approaches to the issue. Based on experience from these courses, there were eight recommendations formulated for teachers who want to prepare their students for the existence of the "obecná čeština" spoken outside the school.
1) At appropriate time introduce the co-existence of "obecná" and "spisovná čeština" and the language situation in the Czech Republic.
2) Present the selected phenomena of the "obecná čeština" and take into account the distance of the mother tongue and target language.
3) Show "obecná" and "spisovná čeština" in contrast.
4) Build the awareness of the general adequacy of the "obecná čeština" variety, but don''t force students to use it active.
5) Encourage students to analyze the situation where there the "obecná čeština" is being used and discuss their experiences.
6) Prepare students for the real (authentic) communication situations where the "obecná čeština" might be hear, e.g. use appropriate incentives in your lessons.
7) Point out the specific practices of native speakers in communication (codes switching).
8) Practice the students'' compensatory strategies.
