Abstract

The arithmetical semantic learning environment Father Woodland is suitable for the development of early number sense in primary school. The added value of this environment is that the conceptual and equational thinking is well developed when working in it.

Three in-service teachers (the authors) under the supervision of the second author prepared a handbook for Italian teachers who wanted to exploit the environment (Zio Tobia in Italien) in grade 1. It had to be modified with respect to the different cultural background.
