Neutron resonance spin determination using multi- segmented Detector DANCE

Abstract

A sensitive method to determine the π of neutron resonances is introduced based on the statistical pattern recognition technique. The new method was used to assign the πs of s-wave resonances in 155Gd.

The experimental neutron capture data for these nuclei were measured with the DANCE (Detector for Advanced Neutron Capture Experiment) calorimeter at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. The highly segmented calorimeter provided detailed multiplicity distributions of the capture γ-rays.

Using this information, the πs of the neutron capture resonances were determined. With these new π assignments, level spacings are determined separately for s-wave resonances with J π 1 -and 2 -.
