Abstract

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are relatively common disorders among adolescent and young adult women, with a prevalence of clinically significant eating disorders from 1% to 3%. Anorexia nervosa is characterized by extreme weight loss to 15% or more below ideal body weight, intense fear of becoming fat, and a distorted body image.Bulimia nervosa is characterized by binge eating followed by purging behaviors, such as self-induced vomiting, fasting, exercise, and laxative or diuretic use.
