Abstract
The chapter deals with the contribution of Crates of Mallus to the methods of evaluation and interpretation of poetry. The criteria of a quality poem which was proposed by Crates are interpreted in this chapter as a kind of crisis of Greek poetry in the hellenistic period when the mythological content of poems ceased to fit into the contemporary oponion about the world.
