Abstract

China's urban population grew, from 1978 to 2008, by 434 million people. Rooted in reforms initiated by Deng Xiaoping in 1978, this urbanization represents one of the world's largest migrations.

However, a huge movement like this is accompanied by many counterparts - restrictions, environmental strains and social inequality (particularly the divergence between urban and rural areas).
