Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2011

Abstract

The authors deal with banknotes as sites/places of historic memory, which attain a range of economic, social, power- political and cultural meanings in a modernizing society in the 20th Century. František Palacký (1798 - 1876) in the position of the "Father" of the Czech nation assumed the role of the foremost protagonist for them.

After the downfall of Czechoslovakia his portrait designed by Oldřich Kulhánek appeared on a new one thousand crown Czech banknote (1993). Palacký became in this way with others "Czech" historical personalities a "revitalized" site/place of the Czech historic memory, which was created at this time in the terms of the Czech belonging to the Western culture. The study of Šouša and Štaif is continued by their interview with Mr.

Kulhánek about whole of his collection of the Czech banknotes created by him in the year 1993. See the pp. 653 - 665.
