Language Resource Centre hosted an international conference on teaching English to the Deaf and hard of hearing university students with the main speaker prof. Jimmy Gore who is a Deaf ELT teacher currently working at Gallaudet University.

Together with his hearing colleague Mr. Robert Gillies, they developed a new, innovative, visual way of teaching English focused mainly, but not exclusively, on Deaf learners, called MVL (Manipulative Visual Method) which Mr.

Gore presented for the first time in Europe during the conference organized by LRC. Jimmy Challis Gore presented his MVL method at LRC on two consecutive days.

He not only introduced his method, but also discussed its possible application on Czech language. The fact that MVL method is so highly respected abroad, plus the fact that this was the first MVL presentation in Europe, attracted audience not only from Czech universities, schools and other applied linguistic professionals, e.g.

Masaryk University in Brno, the University of Hradec Kralove, but also students, teachers and specialists from abroad, namely from the University in Salamanca, Spain, and from Jagellonian University in Cracow, Poland.
