Decline and Demise of the Communist Regimes in the Central and (South-)Eastern Europe

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2011

Abstract

The paper traces the demise of the communist regimes from three perspectives: economic-political, socio-historical and cultural. According to the central argument of the paper, main integrative forces were falling apart in the late period of the dictatorships - the ideological language, social homogeneity, sustainable degree of economical effectiveness and political unity.

The problems culminated in the middle of the 1980s. Though Gorbachev aimed at the system changes, perestroika and glasnost led to the collapse of the system.
