Abstract

Disability is regarded as an intricate phenomenon which may be determined either biologically or socially. Disability usually has impact on all major life spheres.

There are various disciplines involved in prevention and elimination of effects of disability. This is above all skilled social work.

The nature of intervention strategies of particular professionals is highly dependent on the way disability is perceived, which is the so called model of disability analysis. The two core concepts within this field are the individual (medical) and social models of disability.

The distinction between them is made up by using diverse definitions of disability. In addition, models differ in the way disability is created and what its original source might be.

Social work as a social science is primarily aimed at client's social functioning in context of his/her environment. For that reason social model of disability provides social work with broader theoretical and practical basis for effective interventions.
