The Vietnamese community in Jihlava : Identity and relationship to the Czech public

Abstract

A specific community of Vietnamese is introduced in the historical context of the Vietnamese population in the Czech republic. The chapter summarizes the situation of the Vietnamese community in the town of Jihlava during its formation in the 1980's.

According to respondent interviews a comparison with the contemporary situation is carried out. It focuses on Vietnamese merchants.

Based on selfreflection, the possibilities of preserving national minority identity (traditions, customs, language)in the Czech environment are presented. Further, the relationship of Vietnamese community members towards the Czech majority is discussed.

Great attention is paid to the Vietnamese-Czech intercultural communication as well.
