Abstract

The occurrence of heavy snowfalls in the Czech Republic is analyzed in relation to CHMI synoptic weather type classification. Statistically significant synoptic types for heavy snowfalls in the Czech Republic are identified.

Special attention is given to cyclones originating in the Mediterranean area. This region favours regeneration and development of cyclones in the sub-region of Adriatic Sea and Bay of Genoa and these cyclones then move to the Balkans and central Europe.

These cyclones are usually slowly and partly retrograde moving and have pronounced advection of warm and wet air at higher levels.
