Abstract

Solving education in the Roma minority population is a complicated process, not only in the Czech Republic, but also in other countries. The education of Roma people cannot be solved without a systemic solution coordinated by the state.

Short-term programs do not fulfil the desired outcomes. Teacher preparation at faculties of education in the area of Roma studies and Roma language is not systematic and it is sometimes only a marginal matter.

The language barrier of Roma children is often underestimated at basic schools. The difference between Roma language and Czech language is significant and it results in a lack of understanding of the educational problems of these pupils.

It is necessary to use all the educational approaches which are offered by the current educational system to prevent redundant enrolment of Roma children into special schools. Low aspirations in Roma families influence negatively on the value system of children and they lead to insufficient education which impacts their employability.

Lower social status becomes expected; it leads to poverty and social exclusion. The ethnical identification has a great significance in the process of Romas' self-awareness.

This ethnic identification results in the individual's emotional need to identify with certain group and the school educational system has a non-substitutable environment to create a positive ethnical identification.
