Temporary Incapacity to Work vs. Presenteeism

Abstract

Temporary Incapacity to Work is considered to be a negative phenomenon. On one hand, it decreases labor productivity and GDP, on the other hand, it increases social and healthcare expenditures.

Moreover, temporary incapacity to work is regarded as occasion for cheating and misusing of sickness benefits. Because of these reasons, the governments and employers have tried to reduce the level of sickness leaves.

These precautions have been criticized by some scholars, because they could motivate workers to be attend at work despite of be sick. But presenteeism leads to decrease of labor productivity as well, increases employer's expenditures and has a negative effect on human health.

There has been proved a positive correlation between an incidence of both alternative of behavior of ill person.
