Abstract
Deserted settlements are an essential part of the Czech landscape. At first, the article discusses the meaning of the term deserted settlement.
Then the causes of settlement desertion in the 20th century and regional distribution of deserted settlements in Czechia are introduced. In the last part of the article, the need for the knowledge of the past of such places is discussed.
