Abstract

In 1908, the article "Probable Error of a Mean" was published under the pseudonym "Student". Its true author, W.

S. Gossett, undertook the exploration of small sample statistics.

The subject was considered unimportant at the time, but the paper eventually changed the world of statistics, as it aroused the interest of R. A.

Fisher and resulted in an extraordinarily productive cooperation of these famous scientists.
