Abstract

Biotechnology is based on the usege of living organisms or parts of them to make or modify products or specific processes. In the context of clarifying the nature of traditional biotechnology (fermentation technology using yeast and bacteria) and the massive development of modern biotechnology (mostly technology based on manipulation of DNA and proteins), it can be better defined as: The use of molecular and cellular processes to solve problems, create products and services.

Despite the enormous potential and the development of modern biotechnology the traditional biotechnology applications are the closest of commercially important and virtually risk-free. It can therefore be advantageously used in teaching as a simple example of a biotechnology process on which its biological essence can be demonstrate.

This article offers an idea to teachers for the inclusion of topics in biotechnology through the inexpensive practical exercises using baker's yeast.
