Abstract
The article tries to state what is "areté" ("excellence") as appearing in work of late archaic lyricist Pindar, in dependance on the value system of the time. "Excellence", in frame of victory odes, is made mainly by origin of athletes, training, influence of gods, and fame, which is conceived in a specific way.
