František Palacký as a memory site

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2011

Abstract

The authors regard František Palacký as a memory site within the meaning of Pierre Nora, i.e. with reference to the facts which are able to call him to mind again on the symbolic plane. They principally focus on the national festival in 1898 and his portrayal on Czechoslovak and Czech banknotes (1934, 1993).

A special merit of the study lies in the anniversary remembrance of the personality of Palacký on postage stamps (1948, 1998). In conclusion they observe that his mythological epithet 'Father of the Nation' displays in the diverse peripeteias of modern Czech history a truly uncommon longevity.
