Applications of the UTCI in the Czech Republic

Abstract

A new Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) was designed for applications in field of human bioclimatology and biometeorology. This poster contents a set of basic tests of the UTCI.

These tests were made using a real data from selected meteorological stations in the Czech Republik. There are selected days with extreme temperatures and days with extreme windy conditions (extratropical cyclone known as "hurricane Kyrill", January 18-19, 2007) for the UTCI testing.

The UTCI is different from more other commonly used indices. The tested index contents complete set of meteorological and radiation factors - air temperature, humidity, wind speed and mean radiation temperature.

The other indices were calculated with limited numbers of these factors - air temperature and humidity (Heat Index), air temperature and wind speed (Wind Chill), air temperature, humidity and wind speed (NET). The tests of the UTCI were important for deciding on possible applications of this index in practice of national weather service in Czech Republic (CHMI).
